Sunday 4 December 2016

Term 4, Room 5

Hi All,

I will keep this brief...

On Wednesday in the morning we will be walking to the town hall to watch Alexandra Primary School's production. We'll be leaving around 9am.  Late morning we will head to DHS to use their school kitchen to whip up our christmas treats.
This morning we will finish off the remaining Eisteddfod poems.  I am very proud of the kids - it's a tough job to get up and speak or perform in front of a crowd and I know for some there are a few hours spent lying in bed at night worrying about this.  Congratulate your children for the fact that they have made the effort to do something out of their comfort zones.
The assembly for these will be this Thursday at 1:30pm.

Vision Meeting at school - Tuesday evening.  Come along - it'll be informative and a nice time to chat with other parents.

LITTLE BIG DAY OUT
Remember Ben's concert is this Sunday, the 11th of December.  Please support his Food for Thought programme in Buenos Aires.  The music will begin at 12pm and continue through until 8pm.  Admission is $10 per child and $20 per family.   If your child is singing, please have them there just before 12pm as we are first up.

Monday 12th - 1pm  - Prize Giving Assembly
Tuesday 13th  - Graduation Mass 6pm.
Wednesday 14th - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Thursday 15th  - Teacher Only Day!

FAMILY RECIPES - Please send these in!

That's all folks,

Have a great week,

Mrs Lyon

Term 4, Week 8

Hi All,

We are now without a doubt on the downhill slide to summer holidays...!

This week we have a few things to sort for the end of the year.
We have been practicing our song/dance for the end of year assembly.  Please encourage your kids to learn the words/moves as often as possible...this will make for a slick performance and an appreciative audience.
Next Wednesday afternoon we will be heading to the Dunstan High School tech kitchen for some Christmas baking fun. Mrs Sanders, myself and the children will be walking up to the school and fixing up some treats for ourselves and to give to others.  If there are any parents who are keen to join us or drop equipment to school this would be greatly appreciated.  The children have been planning what they are making and also what they will need to do this.  We are using the kitchen space for ovens and bench tops and that's pretty much it, so if there are anythings more specific needed, your child will need to bring this along.
Mrs Sanders and myself will provide flour, sugar and eggs (if needed - if you can supply these that would be great).

LITTLE BIG DAY OUT:  On Sunday the 11th of December I would like as many children as possible from Room 5 to sing our end of year song at this concert.  It is a fundraiser for my brother Ben's charity and we have a timetabled slot to perform here.  I'll be sending out a notice and need this returned by the end of this week with an indication of attendance please.

VISION MEETING:  Next Tuesday night there will be a parent evening to share with you all our vision statements for St Gerard's School.  Ben (brother) will be talking about his own vision with Food for Thought programme he runs in Argentina.  Please come along to hear and learn about the visions and also listen to Ben talk about what he's up to.  My brother is doing an amazing job and I am so very proud of him - his talk will be funny AND informative.

FAMILY RECIPES - please send these to school - it can be any recipe that is a favourite in your house.  The Recipe Committee really wants families to have an active involvement in this process so that the recipe book result is ACTUALLY a reflection of our school families.

Thanks Team,
No homework today...some will come home tomorrow.

Mrs Lyon

Thanks team,

Mrs Lyon

Term 4, Week 7

Hi all,

Not long now - down hill slide to the holidays.  I have been super busy over the last few weeks testing and report writing.  Room 5 have settled back into the routine of doing some good old fashioned school work and we have had some great little personal goals set and met with tables, spelling and tidying up (that was my personal goal)!

This week we have Pip from the Life Education Trust coming to school  Room 5 will see her on Thursday, Friday and Monday.  The kids always love having some time on the bus so it'll be great to be a part of some health focussed learning.

Speeches:  The children will be given success criteria for their eisteddfod speeches which should give you some idea of how they can prepare and structure their speech.  We will be working on these in class so that if you need to guide your child, the help will be minimal  (Up to you, but sometimes speech time can be quite stressful for parents).

Homework this week:  A maths sheet and spelling words will be set for homework this week.

Have a great week parents,

Take care,

Mrs Lyon

Saturday 12 November 2016

Term 4, Week 6

Sunday 13th November,

Week 6 is here!  We are on the downhill slide to the summer holidays.  In Room 5 we have been busy working and making sure the remainder of the time we have for 2016 is jam packed full of hard work, new learning and consolidating what we have already learned this year.

This Sunday, some children from Room 4 will be celebrating their first holy communion.  It would be great to see you all at mass supporting the children in their faith journey.

Speech Eisteddfods:  Speech eisteddfods will be held in week 9.  That gives your child 3 weeks to choose a topic, prepare and practice for their speech.

This Thursday we will hold a cultural assembly at 1:30pm.  You are all welcome to attend this.

Maths and Spelling homework will come home again this week.  Please ensure your child makes every effort to get this completed and handed in to me on Friday.

Have a great week,

Mrs Lyon.

Sunday 6 November 2016

Term 4, Week 5

Sunday 6th November

This week is a busy one for me.  I have some release time scheduled, a maths course to attend and Mrs Sanders will be in Room 5 on Wednesday, instead of her usual Friday.

Presentation of science research this week:  Towards the end of the week the children will be presenting their research on bees and pollination to the class.  This project has had a focus of a poster presentation instead of our usual slide show and talk.  The children are focussing on transactional writing and have included such things as labelled diagrams, research information written in their own words and illustrations with an educational focus.

Note taking:  This week we practiced the skill of note taking as we listened to our class visitor (Mr Whitaker) tell us about bees and pollination  It was great to see the kids so interested in what Mr Whitaker had to say.  We had a nice taste of honey in the comb too.  Talking to an expert (biology teacher and hobby bee keeper) is a great way to learn more about a research topic.  Thanks to Dad for coming in and being so cool with the kids.

This week there will be spelling and maths homework.  Keep up the nightly reading too please - it really does make a difference to vocabulary, spelling, writing and of course reading mileage.

Have a great week parents.  Don't forget to remind your kids that they are awesome!

Mrs Lyon.

Sunday 30 October 2016

Term 4, Week 4

Hi All,

I cannot believe we have hit week 4...this leaves us with 6 and a half weeks left of school!  We'll be packing in a mega load of learning between now and then.
At the moment in class the children are researching bees and pollination.  When we dig into the science of how bees and plants a co-dependent, there's a real appreciation for the amazing life processes that happen every day - we are keeping an eye out for this in our school garden too.  I'd encourage you to ask your kids about what they have learned so far.

Central Sports:  For those of you who have children attending the CO's on Tuesday please ensure they have their full sports uniform, sunhat, sunscreen, plenty of food AND water.  Myself, Mr Yeoman and Mrs Eastwood will be accompanying the children.

Thyme Fest Lunchtime Concert:  This Wednesday 2nd November.

Assembly:  This week Rooms 5 and 6 will share assembly.

Family Mass:  Saturday 5th November - A picnic lunch will precede this along with some fun games - starting at 5pm.

Have a great week awesome parents,  and remember that I reckon your kids are awesome too!  Room 5 Rocks!

Mrs Lyon.

Late notice sorry - can the children please wear sports uniform tomorrow as we have athletics practice in the afternoon.
Thanks!

Term 4, Week 3

Hi all,

A big congratulations to all the students in our school for an amazing effort in the school production. The show was a big success and we have had all sorts of lovely feedback from audience members on how wonderful it was.  I have to say that it has been timely having an extra day in the weekend to recover from the busyness of the last 2 weeks.

This week at school...not too much is happening.  I will have my release day on Thursday so Mrs Sanders will be in class then.

Friday is ATHLETICS DAY!

Term 4, Week 2

HI all,

Please read the previous post for information regarding production practice.

Please remind your children to have all of their costumes brought to school in a named bag TOMORROW so that they can be ok'd and ticked off for having everyone sorted.

NOW is a good time to get into the office and purchase tickets for the shows.  There is a matinee performance on Wednesday at 1pm and night time performances on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The show is going to be a huge success - the kids have worked so hard and the singing is amazing!

Softball/T-Ball:  Tomorrow there will be a notice coming home regarding these two sports.  It is important that these be returned by Wednesday so that teams can be sorted.

Touch:  We will begin touch games next week after last week's change in timetable and this week's production on Thursday night.  It is great to have so many kids playing and a big thanks goes out to the parent's who have offered their help in managing the teams.

We will have spelling words and a maths homework sheet this week.

I think that's it for now, see y'all at the show!

Welcome back everyone,  I trust the kids have all had a nice break from school and are ready to get back into the swing of things for our final term for 2016.

Term 4 is pretty busy so please remember to check the blog for up to date information specific to Room 5.  The newsletter is the best place for all other news.

Swimming: Our last swimming day will be on Tuesday morning.  We have an earlier swim time of 9:30am to enable us to get back to school for production practice at 10:30am.  Please ensure your child is at school on time on Tuesday morning as we will leave promptly after a short prayer and roll call.  Normal togs and goggles are the go for the pool this week.

Production Costumes:   You child will either be a Raindrop, Animal or Elvis in the production  There are some requirements for costumes.  Raindrops will need to wear blue long sleeves and pants (any blue is fine) and will be decorated with some sort of raindrop accessory...to be finalised this week.  If your son is in the Elvis dance they will need to wear a shirt with a collar and jeans - with school shoes.  Animals with specific speaking/singing parts will be assigned onesies by Mrs Wright.

NEWS FLASH - ROUND THE CLOCK RACE

We are hoping to have a couple of kids teams in the Round the Clock Race on Friday night as a part of The Blossom Festival Celebrations.  This is the best race in the world if you ask me and a unique opportunity for all to take part in a world class race!

For all parents interested in helping out with managing a school team - please could you let me know! This really only involves about an hour of your time!

Alternatively why not enter the race yourselves!!!

For all interested children there will be a meeting at school tomorrow to sort teams.

Mrs Lyon.

Week 9 People!!!!

Hi all,

Last week of term 3 - it has been a shortie but a goodie!  We have packed a whole lot of learning, sporting, singing and swimming into a very short term.

SWIMMING - PJ's please - Tuesday swimming this week involves the kids working on river safety again.  They have been asked to bring along their PJ's - no ONESIES! If you don't have any PJ's available, a pair of long pants and a long sleeved top will be perfectly fine.

NOAH PRACTICE - This week we are mostly rehearsing for our Noah production.  Encourage your kiddies to share the songs we are singing with you (and get those words learnt).

Eisteddfod - We have heard a few Eisteddfod songs from some class members.  Over today and tomorrow we should hopefully have them all finished.  Eisteddfod assembly is on Thursday at 1:30pm so please feel welcome to come and have a listen.  Well done to the children who have already completed their performance to Room 5.  It's a big ask for some kids and I am so proud of them all for getting up and sharing a song with us.

Athletics Practice this week will be Monday and Wednesday.  The children are welcome to wear their PE uniforms for this.  Sunscreen is a good idea too - last week it was rather warm outside.

Have a great week, get ready for the holidays mothers and fathers.  Some fun time ahead with your gorgeous kids!

Take care,
Mrs Lyon.

Sunday 11 September 2016

Week 8, Term 3

Hi all,

A reminder that swimming is tomorrow...please remember swimming gear.  It's just togs tomorrow...next week is shorts and t-shirt again.

Garden  - tomorrow after swimming we will be in the school garden.  We have been designated a spot and are hoping to grow some edible greens for the children in Room 5 to be able to use in their lunches if they would like.  Sue Brydges is a wee legend and volunteers her own time to help the whole school with the garden.
If you want to come and join us we will be there from 11:40-12:45 tomorrow morning.

Eisteddfod singing is this Thursday and Friday.  Please help your child to be ready for this performance.

Sacrament of Confirmation  This week some children in Room 4 are making the sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday.  It would be lovely to see as many of you who can make it to Mass on Sunday to support these children on their faith journey.

Have a great week.

Mrs Lyon

Sunday 4 September 2016

Week 7 Term 3

HI Folks,

Not too much information this week for you all.  Last week was busy with finishing off a narrative writing piece, PAT's and singing/dancing practice for our school production of Noah.

Swimming Tuesday - Please ensure that your child has a t-shirt and shorts again this week for swimming as river safety is the focus for this week's lesson.

School Photos - These are happening next week - Monday 12th September.  Full winter uniform must be worn.  If your child was in a sport's team they must also bring along their sports uniform for a team photo.  There are forms for family or individual portraits which have been sent home.  These must be back to Alyssa ASAP if you are wanting pictures of your children taken separately.

BOOKS for Room 5's Library.  If anyone has any age appropriate books to contribute to our lovely Library in class it would be greatly appreciated.  We have picture books through to chapter books and it's always nice to have a little variety so if there are any books being given the heave ho, please think of us first.
A special thank you to the PTA for the donation of some chapter books for group reading in our classroom.  I am super excited to have the opportunity for some group reading and book club type discussions around these new books.

Social Justice Week - Focus on Migration...  Please take a look at this short clip about some migrant students and how they felt about moving to New Zealand and leaving their home countries.  Caritas is holding social justice week from September 11th through to 17th.  If you would like to read more about this just click this link!

Have a wonderful week.   Enjoy your gorgeous kids - I certainly do.  Room 5 is a great place to be.

Ka Kite Ano

KAPA HAKA

"It's now been confirmed that the Kapa Haka group will be performing at the Otago Polyfest in Dunedin on Wed 14th September. Thankyou to all those who have offered to help with costumes and transport. Mr Yeoman and Mrs Beilby are currently confirming details with these helpers and more information will be coming home with students in the next few days. Thanks!"

Term 3 Week 5

Hi all,

It's my turn to lead whole school prayer tomorrow morning in the church.  I hope I send out a message to the children which motivates them to be kind to one another this week.  We often talk about kindness in Room 5 and how, at times, it's important to be kind to yourself.  Recognising those times when a sit down and a quiet moment might be just what you need can make all the difference to your day.

Action in Room 5 this week...

Swimming - Tuesday morning. Please remind your child to bring their togs for swimming!!!

Tuesday this week is also Central Otago Cross Country day.  Those children attending should be prepared with a decent lunch, plenty of water and warm clothes.

Wednesday afternoon is an open day at school  This is a chance for new families to come and have a little look at what schooling is like at St Gerard's.

Sunday 28th August - Whole School Mass.  Please bring a plate for a cuppa afterwards.  Mrs Lyon's favourites include Rocky Road, Chocolate Caramel Slice and Tan Square...hint hint...

Mrs Sanders will be in class on Friday this week.

Please encourage 20 minutes reading, spelling words, times tables practice, doubles and basic facts too...there will be a maths sheet coming home which is due for completion on Friday.

Have a great week.  The warmer weather is making me smile and think about the long stretch of warmth we have in front of us.

Mrs Lyon
