Term 1, Week 5

Swimming Sports:  Please ensure your child is dressed in appropriate house colours and that they have plenty to eat and drink tomorrow.  Two towels is usually a good idea for the sports day and obviously checking the goggles are packed is the go on swimming sports day.
I hope to see many of you at the pool cheering on your fantastic kids, the swimming sports are always great fun and a great way for the whole class to support each other in their swimming successes.
Swimming sports helpters:  Please report to Deb O'Neill and Chris Beilby by 8:50am if you have volunteered your services at the swimming sports.

School Kit - Get NZ writing:  As part of a national push to get NZ school students writing, School Kit have sent our class a poem layout and metaphor postcards which we will complete in class by this Friday so that they can be sent to another classroom in NZ.  Look out for next week's blog where I'll post our poem and also include details of the class we will swap with.  Their writing should arrive to our classroom sometime next month!

Homework this week is the usual spelling, reading and maths sheets.  I have also sent an email to your child with a link to the digital learning objects on the nz maths website.  These tools are easy to use and are helpful to cement the learning we do in class.

See some of you tomorrow - have a good week.

Mrs Lyon.

Term 1, Week 4, 2017

Hi All,

Thank you to those of you who attended school mass this morning.  What a beautiful weekend it has been, and this morning's cuppa following mass was the perfect chance for us all to have a nice catch up.

We also saw a performance from the Evangelisation Team from Wellington who will be visiting the school this Wednesday.

Swimming:  Once again this week we have swimming on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.  We bus to the pool on Tuesday and walk on Thursday.  Please ensure your child brings a drink bottle on these days as they do get rather thirsty.  We have been mainly working on swimming endurance during our swim sessions, this should hopefully pay off for all next Tuesday when we have the school swimming sports.

Entries for Swimming Sports Events:
The children in Room 5 will be thinking about which events they wish to be entered into for the Swimming Sports. Please chat with your child about which events they intend to compete in, so that our information is accurate and finalised by this Thursday.

Thanks to those of you who have brought in glue sticks, we are still waiting on a number of families to bring these in.

Homework this week will be a maths sheet, spelling, reading for 20 minutes each night and study ladder tasks.

Have a great week,

Mrs Lyon

Term 1, Week 3 - February 13-17

Hi all,

For those of you who made it to last week's assembly to see Room 5 lead the proceedings, you may have noticed how capable our young people are.  At the beginning of the week I left the job of completing the slide show presentation to 4 girls and they did a fantastic job.  The independence, skill development and confidence that comes from taking on a project, working on it towards a deadline, and presenting a finished product is a skill to be valued and celebrated.  A big thank you from me to everyone who contributed from Room 5 to make our Assembly a success (a fun success!).

This Week
BYOD and Technology Agreement:  For those of you who did not attend the parent teacher meeting, your child will be bringing home a contract to be signed by parent and child regarding the use of technology at school.  Please read this through together with your child and return to school by Friday of this week.  If a child does not work within the guidelines of the contract they will lose the use of the school's/their own device for 2 weeks and parents will be notified of this.

Swimming
Swimming is on Tuesday and Thursday this week - please bring all gear and ensure a water bottle is packed especially on these days - the children get thirsty and tired after a big swim.  Thursday, in particular as we walk to and from the pool on this day instead of taking the bus.

Parish Mass
Wednesday 15th of Feb, 9am - Please come and join the whole school for mass.

SCHOOL MASS
This Sunday the 19th there is a school mass.  Please have your child come along in uniform and bring a plate for morning tea or an item for the Food Bank.  Mass starts at 9am.

Homework
Homework this week will be 20 minutes of reading each night, spelling words to be tested on Friday, Study Ladder (students will be given their username and passwords tomorrow) and/or a maths worksheet.

Have a great week,

Mrs Lyon.

Term 1, Week 2

Monday 6th February,

Week 2 already!  Last week we spent time getting into the rhythm of Room 5, working towards learning attitudes during class time and working with each other as a team while being aware of our differences.

Coming up this week:
Tuesday - am - I have release time.  At this stage Mrs Donaldson will be in Room 5 every Tuesday morning until play time to cover me while I plan and prepare. She will continue the normal class programme.

Tuesday/Thursday- pm - SWIMMING - PLEASE BRING SWIMMING GEAR.  This means togs, towel and goggles if used.  We will be alternating each week with Room 6 - walking to the pool and bussing as we switch swim times to ensure we each have a session with 3 lanes instead of 2. Swimming will happen for weeks 2, 3 and 4.
Wednesday 8pm - Meet the Teacher evening.
Proposed outline for ‘Meet the Teacher Night’ - Wednesday 8th February:
*5.30- 6.00:  picnic tea
*6- 6.20: Meeting in Room 5 – introduction of new teachers; procedures around Restorative Practice; Student ICT agreement regarding BYOD and Email accounts; Reporting and Communication.
*6.25 - 6.40:  Rooms 1, 2,7
*6.40 - 6.55: Rooms 4 & 5
*6.55 - 7.10: Rooms 3 & 6

Glue Sticks - Many thanks to Jenny Constable who donated 10 glue sticks to Room 5 to cover our shortfall.  A gentle to reminder to you all to please have your child bring 3-4 named glue sticks to school as these were left off the stationery list.

Homework will begin this week.  See you all Wednesday night and have a great week.

Mrs Lyon

Wednesday 1 February 2017

Term 1, Week 1 2017

Welcome to Room 5 (those of you who are new) and welcome back to Room 5 those of you who are not.  We had a nice, gentle ease back into school today and I look forward to getting to know our new Year 5 students over the next few weeks.  We also welcome Lachie Diack who joins us from St Peter Chanel School in Green Island.  Lachie is in Year 5 this year.

Important dates
Monday 6th January - Waitangi Day.  School Closed
Tuesday 7th February - Swimming Programme begins
Wednesday 8th February - 5:30pm: Meet the Teachers Evening.
Potential date for School Mass will be Sunday 19th February at 9am.  Pencil this in folks.
Tuesday 28th February - School Swimming Sports.  These will be held in the morning.
Wednesday 1st March - Ash Wednesday.
Thursday 2nd March - NZ Playhouse will perform at school at 1:30pm.

Homework:  Homework for this year will involve a maths sheet, spelling words and the expectation that reading will happen for at least 20 minutes on a daily basis.  If you or your child prefers to use Study Ladder and is able to do this regularly, or you find it easier than completing a sheet, I am happy for you to do this as an alternative and will check to see that time is spent if this is the option chosen. For the record - please just let me know if your week is ever too busy and I am more than happy to accept homework not done in this case.

Glue Sticks: Please forgive my oversight in not popping these on the stationery list for your children. If and when possible, could your child bring along 3 named large glue sticks to school? Please feel free to send along partially used sticks or leftovers from last year.

I think that's it for this week.

Have a lovely long weekend too.

Mrs Lyon.
